The Corsair Nationals 2021 – a huge success for the Corsair Trimaran Community

On a beautiful, sunny weekend – the first weekend of March, the SBMR hosted one of the best regattas in Florida.  The regatta welcomed 20 Corsair trimarans gathering together in the pristine waters of Sarasota Bay, Florida.  Here is the video recap of the regatta:

In addition to the 20 Corsairs, the SBMR Regatta welcomed some Stiletto, Windrider, Wetas and a variety of other catamarans and trimarans. The event was amazingly sucessful with 40 trimarans registered for 3 days of races.  All COVID-19 safety guidelines were outlined in the “Notice of Race” and all sailors, their crews and the organizers followed the restrictions to the letter of the law – for which we are all grateful.

This year the regatta had our Corsair 880  hull #2 joining the PHRF Low series, sailed by Tula’s Endless Summer and Wright Yachts representative, Scott Wallingford. The competition was rather exciting for Billy and Sierra, who joined the regatta for the first time. They came in 6th in the PHRF race but it felt like a win to the regatta novices.

“We lost every race and blew out our spinnaker but the race committee said we looked like we were having the most fun so we will take that as a win! Lesson learned a boat filled hundreds of pounds of cruising gear for a month long trip isn’t as fast as an empty boat.” – Tula’s Endless Summer

60 days until SBMR Regatta/Corsair Nationals

Sarasota Sailing Squadron is hosting the next SBMR Regatta/Corsair Nationals for 2021. The dates are March 5-7 2021.

The regatta is targeting a number of 35 Corsair trimarans gathering together in the pristine waters of Sarasota bay, FL. In addition, the SBMR Regatta is also expected to attract classes including Stiletto, Windrider and a variety of other multihulls/trimarans.

We look forward to seeing you and your crew flying on the Bay and with your favorite Corsair.  There will be lots of racing! A box take out dinner on Saturday due to Covid precautions. Registration is only through Regatta Network and will close on Wed, 3/3/21 at 5 p.m. There is no onsite or late registration. Registration is now open.

The regatta will host 3 full days of racing with up to 12 races scheduled. There are 2 options for days of racing, you can either go with 2-day or 3-day races.

Corsair 880 To Be 2021 Best Sport Boat Of The Year By Cruising World

On 8 December 2020, Corsair is honored to learn the Corsair 880 has been awarded as the Best Sport Boat in the 2021 BOTY competition By Cruising World Magazine.

In the midst of a pandemic, a determined group of builders, brokers and sailors presented Cruising World judges with a fleet of a dozen nominees for seatrials in venues ranging from New England to Florida.

Simple accommodations and sparkling sailing performance earned this trimaran an Honorable Mention for Best Sportboat.

On a cold November afternoon, we rolled up to the dock at the ancient Cape Cod Shipyard, hard along the waters of the Wareham River Basin, for the concluding sail of our 2021 Boat of the Year campaign aboard the Corsair 880, a 28-foot folding trimaran built in, of all places, Vietnam. It wasn’t on purpose, but you could easily say we saved the best for last. The best sail in our 2021 BOTY sea trials, that is.

We were joined by Bob Gleason, who’s been peddling fast tris for as long as we can remember, and Dave Reed, the editor of our sister publication, Sailing World: two boys who always can be counted on to press on a bit more sail. In other words, for the task ahead, darn-near perfect companions.

The classic Buzzard’s Bay sea breeze had kicked in, ­appropriately—like, what else is new?—as we powered out of the basin and into the fresh southwesterly. Up went the big, roachy, powerful square-topped mainsail, and out went the self-tending jib. We were sailing.

The Corsair 880 is cool, cool, cool. Comfortable canvas bench seats. A nice little interior with all the basics for pleasant camping-­style cruises. A rotating carbon-fiber spar. A tiller with an extension, and the traveler and mainsheet right at hand. Sails up, daggerboard down. As good as it gets.

We tacked upwind for a while to say we did, got some ­numbers, and then the real fun commenced. First, bye-bye jib; hello Code Zero. Welcome to the realm of double-digit boat speeds, which always feel faster when you’re reaching on a screamer under 30 feet. Greetings, sailing world, indeed.

We swapped the helm back and forth, and took snapshots of one another. Who had the biggest smile? It was a tie. Then the kite went up for the run back to the dock. Heaven on Buzzard’s Bay.

There wasn’t another boat around, and for that matter, there wasn’t another boat in the competition that matched up with the Corsair. But you can be sure as heck we were still going to name it the year’s Best Sportboat. Which we could. So we did.

I grew up as a kid sailing in the shallow waters of the Bassin d’Arcachon, a protected sandy cove surrounded by big sand dunes and pine forest near Bordeaux. The Bassin is a former lake alongside the sea that eventually connected to the Bay of Biscay a few thousand years ago. Outside of the narrow passes you are in the open ocean with the big swell of the Basque Country, but inside it’s flat like a lake. I was sailing on various dinghies, hobie cats and windsurfers and the sentence “one day we’ll sail to Tahiti” always came to the conversation after our days of exploration on the water. Little did I imagine I would actually be sailing in the Islands of Tahiti on Corsair’s legendary trimarans 40 years later.

The Corsair are probably the best boats for fun sailing in French Polynesia. They are fast, they are easy to maintain, they can sail in very shallow waters yet they are seaworthy enough to go from one atoll to the next in the tradewinds that blow pretty much every day across our part of the South Pacific. Or you can tow them behind your car and send them on an inter-island transport ship.

French Polynesia is a huge area, the size of western Europe and comprises 118 atolls and islands for a population of under 300 000 inhabitants. We are right in the middle of the Pacific, a long string of atolls and islands distributed in 5 different archipelagoes: The Society Islands (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Taha’a, Huahine, Raiatea, Maupitu…), the Tuamotus atolls, the Austral Islands, the Marquesas and the Gambiers. There are 3 different types of islands: high mountain islands like the Marquesas, with big jungle covered cliffs falling into the wild ocean. Atolls like in the Tuamotus made of a ring of coral. All around the ring you find tiny sand islets. Inside the atoll the waters are usually calm and shallow. They are like an oasis in the middle of the ocean, with incredible amount of sea life, colorful fish and coral heads. They usually connect to the ocean through a pass but some are completely closed. The Society islands and Gambier islands are a mix of the two: high mountain islands surrounded by a lagoon separated from the ocean by a coral ring.

This makes for very exhilarating multihull sailing: you can glide on the flat waters of the atolls and lagoons in 15+ knots, or sail offshore in the big rolling swells that cross the Pacific.

I have raced 4 times in the Tahiti Pearl Regatta on a Corsair Pulse 600. The TPR takes place each year in May in the Leeward islands of the Society group: Huahine, Taha’s, Raiatea and the world famous Bora Bora. Each morning there is a round the mark race inside one of the lagoons, followed by an offshore race to the next island: https://youtu.be/xI16Y0rYQr8 .The Corsair Pulse 600 have been incredible to race: super-fast and nimble in the protected and shallow lagoons, and completely safe in the open seas. In fact, we have taken line honours in almost all of the legs.
