West Coast Multihull Performance kicked off 2014 with a bang!
The beginning of 2014 has seen a long overdue return of Corsair action on the water in San Diego. West Coast Multihulls Performance was officially launched on Jan 1, 2014 with the initial target of re-developing and elevating a Corsair racing fleet in So-Cal. Below are highlights of WCM Performance so far:
We lobbied for and were accepted to the San Diego PHRF fleet as a Multihull Division with Bob Lang and I (Mat Bryant) as the board members. This is a significant step in that it is the first time in the US and possibly the world that Multihulls are accepted into the established race governing organization and can play in all the same regattas and clubs as monohulls.
Corsair CLINICS in San Diego
Corsair Mini Clinic – with great success we tried a new formant for raising awareness of Corsair Trimarans and to simply get people on the water. Over a weekend, 4 two hour sessions were filled and 12 new sailors got a taste of Corsair trimarans. This short but sweet approach proved to be popular and requested again. The highlight of the weekend was rolling over the top of an old Americas Cup boat full of new sailors as well. Can you guess who had more fun?
Corsair Performance Clinic – This 1 day clinic was designed to help owners and current Corsair sailors get the most out of their boats. Corsair specific theories and practices were presented in a class setting in the AM and then taken onto the water and implemented in the PM. This turned out to be a great day with all four boats exceeding 15kts boat speed by end of day!
Corsair Race Clinic – The primary purpose of this clinic was to prepare the local fleet for the NOOD regatta. Given that the NOOD is a windward-leeward buoy race, the emphasis during the chalk talk was on starts, tacks, jibes and spinnaker sets/take downs.
Sailing World NOOD Regatta — All of the effort of the previous weeks/months was greatly rewarded when a fleet of five Corsair trimarans roared off the line at the gun of the first race. The last time there was a Corsair fleet in the San Digo NOOD was 2003 and it was certainly 10+ yrs overdue as it was a great event! Saturday and Sunday were picture perfect sailing days with plenty of sunshine and 15kts at a point each day. The racing was close at the top and the regatta was ultimately decided by 2 seconds in the end! The overall feeling at the Yacht Club during the awards ceremony was that we, the Corsair fleet, were all winners as the fleet is here again. Multihulls are becoming more widely accepted and it seemed we all had more fun sailing our boats than most people out there.
Cabrillo Series Ocean Race — 3 months of hard work and testing to get the C31-1D former “Lei Leo” now named “F-Bomb” up to speed paid off last weekend. Being the most powerful Corsair ever built, with the highest SAD number (sail area displacement ratio) this is a fast boat that takes time and practice to sail well. Proud new owner Larry Adams and crew took down all the boats including two highly modified TP-52′s to win the regatta overall by 10 min!
