The process of launching a trimaran, from raising the mast to trailing to the water can be stressful for new sailors. Here is a quick and simple guide on how to set up a Corsair folding trimaran. This post features the 29′ Corsair 880, the 2021 Boat of the Year in the Sport Category. The following techniques and procedures are broadly applicable to all Corsair folding trimaran models. Typically, two people can have a Corsair 760, or Corsair 880 rigged and launched in around 30 minutes. The Cruze 970 and 37 may take a little longer as everything is larger and heavier.

Note: Always park into the wind or uphill to help the mast stay in line while being winched up. The trailer should remain hooked to towing vehicle at all times. And of course, before starting to rig, check to see that there are no power lines for the mast to touch while being raised, or between the raising location and the ramp to the water.

MAST RAISING PROCEDURE

Step 1: Untie the line that hold the boat to the trailer. Leave one of the lines on the attachment point on the boat and move the other line to the same size on the bow. Now you can use them for your dock lines after you launch. Also untie the other line that secures the mast to the boat and free up the shrouds.

Step 2: Make sure the mast yoke is installed. Lift up the bottom end of the mast and slide it along the mast roller so that the mast heel is over the yoke. Once the bottom of the mast is close to the yoke, use this opportunity to tilt it off and tilt the head of the mast down.

Step 3: Pin the heel of the mast to the mast yoke. Ensure the mast yoke is fitted to the mast heel with a pin.

Step 4: Insert the mast raising pole or the gin pole in the front of the mast, then attach the support line from the gin pole to the eye on the mast above it as well as to the mast raising supports on deck. Tension these lines to make sure that the gin pole is straight and secure.

Step 5: Connect the mast raising shrouds to the same eye on the front of the mast and also on the mast supports down to the side.

Step 6: Run the screacher or the spinnaker halyard over the mast raising pole and connect it to the trailer winch line. Use a bowline for this connection just in case any of the hardware fails.

Step 7: Stand on the side of the mast and use the mast raising shrouds to make sure the mast stays straight when someone winches it off. Proceed very slowly and pay close attention to any additional friction.

Step 8: Once the mast is fully raised, take out the mast raising pole and connect to foredeck. Once the force stays are connected, loosen up the trailer winch line, disconnect it from the halyard and reconnect it to the eye on the front of the boat. Secure the halyard back on the mast. Connect topping lift to the back of the boom on the dog bone and use it to assist with lifting the boom up and slide to the insert in the mast. Secure this with the boom handle and a pin.

Step 9: Once the boom is in position, reattach the mainsail sheet to the dog bone at the back of the boom. Make sure you leave the mast raising shrouds on until the boat is unfolded and the shrouds are properly tensioned.

LAUNCH THE BOAT

Once Again – Before taking the boat to the ramp first check to see there are no power lines for the mast to touch.

Step 10: Remove the mast yoke. Unpin the beams and fold them out, making sure not to catch any lines underneath the beams, then tighten the four bolts that hold the four beams in place.

Step 11: Take out then store the rear mast fan and tighten the Highfield levers or lashings appropriately.

Step 12: Take the mast raising shroud off. Finish running your running rigging.

AND THERE YOU HAVE IT! Following these steps will ensure the mast is in secure position and ready to go sailing.

To better demonstrate, we have compiled a more complete video guide to better assist you:

The Corsair 880 is on-tour with the amazing couple, Billy and Sierra, of the sailing channel Tulas Endless Summer. In fact, Billy and Sierra are into everything water and anything to do with the ocean – including surfing, paddling, swimming, kiting, spearfishing and especially SAILING! So the versatile Corsair 880 is a great fit for them.

In November 2020, the Corsair 880 started her journey along the US Coast from New England to Florida. Now they are ready to begin the next stage in their journey from the North-East USA.

Previously, we published the article featuring the new Corsair 880 Interior with detailed description of the furniture and layout inside the 880. The impressive new interior design needs to be seen to be appreciated – but we hope the virtual tour will nevertheless provide great insight into life aboard the Corsair 880, the legitimate heir to the trimaran revolution.

Since there are many of you who have requested a tour that showed every little interior feature, here it is, a complete technical tour of the new Corsair 880 trimaran. This boat has a full “big boat system” including electric lighting, refrigeration, manual or electric toilet, and even air conditioning is available. A small generator complements a lightweight air conditioning or heating unit, and providing comfortable electrical independence when cruising in hot or cold climes. In true Corsair fashion, that generator and air conditioner are removable to reduce excess weight when racing, or reduce trailer weight when on the road. And this is where the 880 trimaran is the revolutionary boat it promises – all of that comes in a folding, trailerable package well below the trailering weight limit of most passenger cars.

Enjoy the tour:

The Corsair 760 offers a incredibly versatile platform that can be folded away and transported by trailer to your favourite destination, but unfolds to provide space, speed and stability when sailing. Optimised for short handed sailing, it’s ideal for a solo adventure to a remote location, or a great way to teach the kids how to sail while having fun…but when racing season starts, you will be always at the front of the fleet with incredibly efficient apparent wind performance only a trimaran can offer.

Here are a few reasons why:

All Corsair trimarans are built tough. They are well-known for their well-engineered construction. The large floats make this trimaran extremely stable even under sail.

You will notice effortless speed along with little heeling. That provides (moderately exciting) experiences for guests! All sail controls lead to the cockpit making it easy to operate when you are solo sailing.

Compact to trailer. Unfold and set-up in 40 minutes ready to launch. The set-up is simple and can be done alone, but it’s more fun and easier if you have a crew or a buddy to help!

What an amazing achievement and positive encouragement to our entire Corsair team.
The Corsair 880 trimaran is built to be completely safe and comfortable for sailors of all skill levels. With the additional comfort features such as air conditioning, heating, refrigerators and more makes the Corsair 880 a revolution for performance trimarans.

Let’s take a look at the top 5 reasons why the Corsair 880 stands out in the busy market of sports sailing boats:

1. Built For All Adventures

Refreshingly modern yet simple interior design compliments the sporty nature of this speed machine. Careful attention has been paid to every detail of the boat to commit to cruising comfort that cruising sailors wish to experience without compromising on performance. The main hull is built to make sure it can deliver the mission of comfortable sailing adventures with full standing headroom. Moreover, the saloon area gives you enough space such as for reading, dining and relaxing. For instance, the galley offers a considerable space for cooking and meal preparation, a compact fridge and stove which should be more than enough for this sporty cruiser.

2. Extraordinary speed

Corsair Trimarans are well known for their ability to “fly” in the wind by generating their own high-power apparent wind. Without a lead keel to create drag, and with tangible buoyancy in design, construction technique and materials, Corsairs trimarans in general and the 880 especially are powered effortlessly by their high-performance design. Like most Corsairs, the Corsair 880 will easily surpass 20 knots.

3. Comfortable stability

Sailing the 880 at any speed and in almost all sea conditions, you will find the wide unfolded beam and huge buoyancy of these wave piercing floats a blessing. No more so is this noticable than when powered up on a reach as you watch those impressive amas “punch” through oncoming swell. The 880 design and construction applied the same traditional Corsair features that make them sail flat and fast, paired with the latest in hydrodynamics and CFD hull form design. All of this provides a supreme sense of security when sailing this rocket in even the worst of conditions, but add to this, the knowledge that a Corsair trimaran cant sink, allows you to sleep peacefully, even when scooting along at over 15kts. In fact, even with with the hulls and all buoyancy compartments filled to the brim with water, the positive buoyancy of the materials of construction keep the vessel afloat even with all crew aboard.

4. Trailerability

The 880 is real cruising boat, yet trailerable across continents. Corsair is famous for the excellent trailering characteristics our trimarans offer, and this same ability proves true for the Corsair 880. Especially since she only takes a single handed sailor about 60 minutes to go from trailer to sailor and back again after a couple of practice runs. Corsairs fold up and extend effortlessly, the mast comes down in moments, the boats towed and trailered easily and smoothly which offers significant cost savings when compared to marina and on water maintenance fees.

5. Light Weight

Weight saving is one of considerable elements that Corsair takes very seriously in all of our designs. Exhaustive research has been put into the design of the 880 to eliminate unneeded weight, which itself makes the boat safer on the water as well as safer on the road through reduced braking distance and lower loads. A fully optioned Corsair 880 weights roughly 4410 pounds (2,000 kgs) ready to sail.

At 29 foot, the Corsair 880 continues a long and successful series in this mid sized cruiser, from the legendary Corsair 27, the Corsair 28 and now the revolutionary 880, this model is destined to once again be considered a legend among real Sport boats.

WELCOME TO THE INTERIOR OF OUR LATEST TRAILERABLE TRIMARAN

This blog is dedicated to showing you the impressive interior design of the Corsair 880, the legitimate heir to the trimaran revolution.

Our newest model, the Corsair 880 – A 28’8” Trimaran, was introduced to the sailing community few months ago mostly via video, webinar and other virtual means.

Having seen the impressive lines and performance of the 880, many of you have asked to see what going on inside! This blog is to show you how the interior has been designed for effortlessly fast performance sailing. Careful attention has been paid to every detail on the boat to commit the cruising comfort that every sailors wish to experience.

Entering the saloon from the companionway there´s a galley to starboard and a large spacious saloon. The main hull is built to make sure it can deliver the mission of comfortable sailing adventures with lots of headroom. The saloon area gives you enough space such as for reading, dining and relaxing. For instance, the galley offers a considerable space for cooking and meal preparation, a compact fridge and stove which should be more than enough for this sporty cruiser.

In October, the 880 was in Wareham and got visited and reviewed by one of our Corsair 24 Owners. His mind was blown by the size of the under-cockpit cabin. The cabin was described that it has the width of a double-bed, but the length of a queen. In addition, it is claimed to make you feel that it’s bigger than a 31-footer’s. Moreover, thanks to the workmanship design, the aft-cabin is built to maximize the interior volume as well as the space for you and your guests. The aft-cabin offers enough space for a good night’s sleep which is appreciated for extended cruising crew.

Corsair 880 is well known for the sailing characteristics as well as the renowned for speed and synonymous for cruiser-racer with style. The boat has radically different aesthetics in both the interior and exterior design for a truly trailerable trimaran.

20 years ago, Mike Horn finished his 18-month voyage around the equator.

On this very day, 27th October, 20 years ago, Mike Horn finally reached Libreville, Gabon on the West Coast of Africa, where he started his solo voyage around the equator on a Corsair 28.

Mike Horn (born 16 July 1966) is a South African-born Swiss professional explorer and adventurer. Mike Horn is globally known as the world’s greatest modern day explorer. From swimming the Amazon River solo and traveling the globe at the equator on a 28’ trimaran (Corsair 28), Mike’s list of accomplishments as a solo explorer is incomparable. Mike Horn became famous in 2001 after completing a 1 year, 4 months and 25 day solo journey around the equator without the assistance of any motorized transport, which departed on 2 June 1999.

Mike Horn completed the incredible challenge of traveling around the world in a straight line of 40,000 kms (24854.8 miles), going along the equator’s Latitude Zero. He spent no more than 2 days before his departure to learn the fundamentals of sailing and navigating on a new Corsair 28 on Lake Geneva before heading across the Atlantic with his Swiss sailor friend – Steve Ravussin.

Mike Horn on his Corsair 28 sailing the world

At the beginning, he barely caught any sleep while he was sailing across the Atlantic Ocean. He slowly and gradually became more familiar with handling the 8 meter Corsair 28 trimaran, and he could finally learnt to sleep adequately during his travel. 19 days after leaving Libreville, he set a new time world record of traveling total of 7,800 km (4,845 miles) across the Alantic.

Corsair 28

On his arrival in South America, he left his boat in the care of his logistics team, and continued crossing of the Amazon jungle from Brazil to Ecuador via Colombia on foot and pirogue. The Corsair 28 was trailered across and awaiting him once again on the West Coast. After three months on the Pacific Ocean he arrived at the Indonesian Islands, from where he crossed the Indian Ocean. Africa, the last continent, he crossed on foot, on mountain bike and pirogue.
To reach his starting point, Gabon, and finalize the loop of his Latitude 0 expedition, Mike had to complete the last stage of his adventure: the crossing of the African continent. Traveling on foot, bicycle and canoe, Mike crossed five countries including Congo, in the midst of a civil war; yet again, narrowly escaping death on several occasions by getting arrested by rebel soldiers whom had decided to sentence him to death, or when he got caught in a storm, causing him to almost drown in Lake Victoria. This last stage, lasted 4 months during which he covered the remaining 4’200km to Libreville.

While most modern life is now filled with electronic devices, Mike Horn has lived his life as a world explorer and seen things that might never be seen by other people. His expeditions have made a great inspiration to the world, especially his book audience. One of the readers once said: “Mike Horn is a very exceptional man, endowed with a physique and a mind of steel. And, moreover, it has an equally exceptional baraka!”

Mike has written four books about his expeditions, each of which has reached the best seller list in France. These books are currently available in several different languages world-wide. Films of his exploits have also been made and have won many prizes throughout Europe.

Mike Horn has done many of those biggest dreams of human being. There are still many world explorers have done their expeditions with many means of travels. Would this inspire you to travel the world with a Corsair trimaran? Let us know your thoughts.

I thought I would share that I headed out to Wareham yesterday to check out the Corsair 880. I did not get to sail on it, my intention was only to see and touch and get a sense of the design and space of the cabin.

I have to say I was blown away. The cabin is huge. It’s been over a year since I’ve been in an F31, but the cabin felt bigger than a 31 to me. The standing headroom is amazing, I’m 5’10” and I’m pretty sure that there were at lease 4″ of extra clearance for me, maybe more. There is gobs of storage space. One thing that blew me away is how it is aft-cabin *AND* aft cockpit. I have always been frustrated by this dilemma in choosing between F-boats less than 32′. I’d say the under-cockpit cabin is about the width of a double-bed, but the length of a queen.

Given that, I was ever more blown away by the sheer space in the cockpit. It is HUUUGE!!! I love the aft traveler, so the cockpit is uninterrupted, and the aft sheeting point on the boom so you can roller-reef, and do not need to move the sheet block forward & back like on my F24. I can’t get over how much space there is in this cockpit, it is surprisingly wide and long. I would estimate that 5 people could sit on one side with real elbow room, and plenty of room for someone to move around in the cockpit while there are people on both sides, without anybody having to get out of his way. It gets even wider at the aft end, and it is so big that it didn’t even occur to me to try sitting out on either of the “beach chair” extensions.

One really cool unusual feature of the boat is the water-facing windows. If you’ve noticed the big black spots under the forward beams, they are tinted Lexan
windows. Inside the cabin, they are at about shoulder-height for me. Apparently it is really cool to watch the water rushing by while under sail from the leeward one, and then the windward one gives you a view of the horizon from under the flying float.

This boat is kicking off live with an interesting story too. Corsair is lending it to a couple that does one of those Youtube channels about their sailing adventures while they wait for a Seawind catamaran to be built. So, we will get to see what living aboard an 880 is like. Their names are Billy and Sierra, and their channel is Tula’s Endless Summer. They are currently getting extensive training on F-boats from Bob and Ira at The Multihull Source, as this is a much higher-performing boat than what they’ve sailed in the past, and (I have to say it…) “With great power comes great responsibility…”

Many thanks to Billy for taking me out to the boat and letting me climb around for a while, and Bob for giving us the OK and for some nice conversation and perspective afterwards.

I grew up as a kid sailing in the shallow waters of the Bassin d’Arcachon, a protected sandy cove surrounded by big sand dunes and pine forest near Bordeaux. The Bassin is a former lake alongside the sea that eventually connected to the Bay of Biscay a few thousand years ago. Outside of the narrow passes you are in the open ocean with the big swell of the Basque Country, but inside it’s flat like a lake. I was sailing on various dinghies, hobie cats and windsurfers and the sentence “one day we’ll sail to Tahiti” always came to the conversation after our days of exploration on the water. Little did I imagine I would actually be sailing in the Islands of Tahiti on Corsair’s legendary trimarans 40 years later.

The Corsair are probably the best boats for fun sailing in French Polynesia. They are fast, they are easy to maintain, they can sail in very shallow waters yet they are seaworthy enough to go from one atoll to the next in the tradewinds that blow pretty much every day across our part of the South Pacific. Or you can tow them behind your car and send them on an inter-island transport ship.

French Polynesia is a huge area, the size of western Europe and comprises 118 atolls and islands for a population of under 300 000 inhabitants. We are right in the middle of the Pacific, a long string of atolls and islands distributed in 5 different archipelagoes: The Society Islands (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Taha’a, Huahine, Raiatea, Maupitu…), the Tuamotus atolls, the Austral Islands, the Marquesas and the Gambiers. There are 3 different types of islands: high mountain islands like the Marquesas, with big jungle covered cliffs falling into the wild ocean. Atolls like in the Tuamotus made of a ring of coral. All around the ring you find tiny sand islets. Inside the atoll the waters are usually calm and shallow. They are like an oasis in the middle of the ocean, with incredible amount of sea life, colorful fish and coral heads. They usually connect to the ocean through a pass but some are completely closed. The Society islands and Gambier islands are a mix of the two: high mountain islands surrounded by a lagoon separated from the ocean by a coral ring.

This makes for very exhilarating multihull sailing: you can glide on the flat waters of the atolls and lagoons in 15+ knots, or sail offshore in the big rolling swells that cross the Pacific.

I have raced 4 times in the Tahiti Pearl Regatta on a Corsair Pulse 600. The TPR takes place each year in May in the Leeward islands of the Society group: Huahine, Taha’s, Raiatea and the world famous Bora Bora. Each morning there is a round the mark race inside one of the lagoons, followed by an offshore race to the next island: https://youtu.be/xI16Y0rYQr8 .The Corsair Pulse 600 have been incredible to race: super-fast and nimble in the protected and shallow lagoons, and completely safe in the open seas. In fact, we have taken line honours in almost all of the legs. In 2018 world famous multihull sailor Loic Peyron participated and we did some match racing with him on the Pulse 600 ( https://youtu.be/OaIoL6vb6O0 )

When Rob Wright, the owner of Wright Yacht Sales, asked me to fly up to Seattle to help commission and handover the all new Corsair 880 I jumped at the opportunity.

During the process of assembly every part easily fit together and build quality, especially for the first one out of the box, was solid. Not everything was perfect but I’ve learned from 40 years of commissioning boats to listen to what the boat is telling me and to find elegant ways to maintain the vision of her designers and builders and that was easy. That said we still had this handy little trimaran ready to splash in under 30 person hours with judicious use of the boatyard crane to help with ama attachment.

While commissioning I heard comments like “looks fast just sitting there” and “that’s one cool boat” while other comments ranged from “beautiful” to “sick.” I assume sick is a positive here.

We ramp launched late in the afternoon on a high tide, raised the mast in typically easy Corsair style and ferried her to her berth in Shilshole Marina for her first night in American waters. Bright and early the next morning we gave the 880 a bath to clean off accumulated boatyard dust and with the new owners we began to tidy things up, tightening nets and shrouds, stringing sheets and finally to bend on the Doyle Technora sails.

Typically there isn’t much summertime wind in the Pacific Northwest and doing this work in 70 degree temperatures with clear blue skys was a wonderful and calm way for us to become acquainted with the 880. As both partners came from I-14 dingy backgrounds they really appreciated this time to get acquainted with their first new “big boat.”

While we worked I was hopeful that the forecast was correct and that a Northerly would fill in the afternoon so after a quick lunch we pushed off from the dock to give it a go.

The 800 maneuvered easily in the marina, especially as the engine and tiller are linked and once we cleared the marina breakwater found that forecast breeze had arrived.

So much like our F-27 back home, the 880 retains that Corsair DNA and in minutes had our Main and Jib are hoisted, sailing full and by. Without doing much more than pulling the in the sheets we were doing close to 7 knots in 6 to 8 knots of wind. We fiddled around with fairlead positions, outhaul, cunningham and sheet tensions, set rotation to an optimal position and right away we began to point well up to weather, light on the helm and well balanced. Like any multihull she liked weight far forward in these conditions and once we got our weight out of the back of the boat she responded with close to a half knot more of speed. It’s hard to know how well we were doing except that there was a 40 monohull going our way and we easily sailed through their lee slowly out pointing them once we cleared them.

Several miles up the sound the wind increased to 9-10kts as we all took turns at the helm, talking about feel and tried different settings and with every little change the 880 felt better and better culminating in fairly steady 7 to 7.1 knots of boat speed. With the water very flat we did encounter occasional powerboat wakes but the boat recovered quickly with barely a pitch and little tendency to hobbyhorse. Yes the waves would slow us a bit but in seconds she’d rebound and come right back up to speed.

Several tacks up the Puget Sound, most the seven miles to Edmonds, we bore away and set our Asymetric Kite and off we went. Alex, one of the boat’s partners at first said, this doesn’t feel all that fast and quite frankly I’d have to agree except that my little handheld GPS told a different story; in not more than 10 knots of wind we were sailing steady a 10.8 to 11.1 knots! Totally a Cadillac ride; smooth, comfortable, no drama. As we neared Shilshole the wind had risen to 12 knots so we executed a Mexican douse onto and lined up on the entrance unfurled the Screecher on what was close to a beam reach, just to give it a try, and rocked the sail right up to the breakwater. All at over 9 knots.

Huge thanks to Perius Design, Richard, Mike, Shane and the entire team in Vietnam for an awesome trimaran. And thanks to Wright Yachts for the opportunity to be the first American sailor to sail this wonderful new Corsair. If ever a boat were a worthy successor to the venerable F-27 the 880 makes a strong case.
