The first item on this list might surprise you. But trimarans are exceedingly safe – in fact many, including all of the Corsair trimarans, are virtually unsinkable. They’re foam cored, and relative to the displacement of the boat, the buoyancy of the materials is very high. Even were a Corsair to be fairly well destroyed (think passenger ferry) the remaining debris would remain at the surface providing something to cling onto. But there are some other interesting stats as well. Kids love trimarans – the nets make for great fun. And were they to fall into the water its reassuring that there are so many places for a person (or child) overboard to grab onto – see the net lines and the beams themselves in the picture to the right. There are also good places at the main transom to haul out a wet, heavy, miniature crewmember.

Speed

No gimmicks. Trimarans simply deliver stunning speed without foils, wings or electronic aids. Speed might have slipped from number 1 factor to number 2 in recent years – and given the advent of foiling monohulls you might think that’s fitting. But consider the costs involved in foiling monohulls and you’ll quickly find that Corsair trimarans have a far greater dollar-to-knot ratio. Operationally, trimarans are now seen as almost conventional in high-speed terms. So you can clock up 20-knot plus speeds with a boat that has a 35-year track record of success and safety, and without the need for professional crew.

Stability

For a trimaran, this counts as “heeling”

While you, the reader are no doubt the hardiest of sailors, there’s also no doubt that not everybody you sail with will be! Corsair trimarans, and most others, have a max heel angle of 12-14 degrees depending on the model. That’s “flat sailing” in monohull terms. And it means that rudders and daggerboards keep a reassuring grip and the speed therefore feels more effortless on the helm. That surefootedness transfers over to your crew – they’ll detect the confidence in the boat and the skipper.

Small Marina Footprint

Fold up and take only a small marina berth or land space

To achieve anything like the speed, and just a bit of the stability and comfort underway, you’d need a relatively large monohull by comparison. But due to the folding mechanism, a Corsair trimaran keeps a very modest marina footprint. Better still, they can be lifted (when folded) and are therefore easy to keep ashore. Want to keep your boat in the water but worried about growth on the floats/pontoons? Anti-fouling wraps from 3M are available from Corsair dealers – remarkably long lived, these are easily replaceable, and maintain a very quick surface. Boat bags, which keep growth away from the floats and main hull, are available for mooring and marina use.

Above Deck Space

Check out the huge unfolded beam of the 24-ft Corsair 760

Anyone with children will immediately identify with this one – Corsairs are fantastic for their wingnet and bownet space. When unfolded, the huge beam provides pound-for-pound the best boating platform around. The nets are often used as sleeping hammocks in extremely hot climates – not just for an afternoon nap, but actually during the night. And most trimarans can be fitted with a bimini, sail shade, or canopee when the sun is strong.

Trimarans are Synonymous with Trailerability

The new Corsair 880 Trimaran will be the Ultimate Trailer-sailer

In the next article, we’re taking a deeper look at trailering trimarans through an interview with the undisputed supremo in trailering tri’s – our very own dealer Werner Stolz from Germany. Trailerability is absolutely central to creating a new holiday experience every year, and for the racers it opens up a whole new world of high speed multihull regattas. That’s why Corsair trimarans are built light – of course it improves your sailing speed, but it also keeps your trailering weight down and reduce road risk. And that’s why the floats fold underneath – so your boat doesn’t get longer on the trailer when folded. For those who don’t want to commit to the same sailing grounds every year there’s no better solution than a Corsair folding trimaran.

880 Construction Update 6

Ok, so as you have seen in the last few updates the Corsair 880 trimaran is really starting to take shape now. At this stage in the game tape measures and calipers are our go to tool. Everything is getting checked and rechecked, we really need to nail this deck, so many other parts are relying on an accurate deck mold in order to properly marry up with the other components. We cannot stress enough how critical this stage is!

Another aspect of these checks is to check the ergonomics and practicality of the design. After all this is the first time we have sat inside the cockpit and walked the deck of what will end up being a 1:1 scale model of the real thing. So we have laid out mock ups of the hardware and work our way around the systems and usage of the boat, all the while making sure everything works, is comfortable and practical. During this exercise we were just blown away at how spacious this boat has turned out, remember this is a trailerable 29′ trimaran. Check out the images below and see just how big that cockpit is, in a few of the shots I am sitting in the cockpit as I would sailing and have included my legs in the shot to give you a sense of scale, i’m 5’11” btw.

The following day it’s about a 50 mile jaunt to base camp at Neptune Island. By this stage, you are quite deep into the Riau Group of islands but just scratching the surface of the 16,500 island in the Indonesian Archipelago!

The collision of the South China Sea and the Java Sea create a sea of legends as the overalls, currents, whirlpools and standing waves in the Cauldron have undoubtedly played havoc with the old trading vessels that use to ply their wares through here.

Neptune Island is uninhabited apart from the Neptune Regatta sailors. It’s a charm – no telecoms, no wifi, no email, just peace, good water and great sailing!

The dash across the Equator comes from the island and The Line lies just 8nm south. The dash is a south and north bound leg. At the end of the day your two times are added together for your daily result. The break between the two legs allows for enough time to accomplish the all important Pollywog initiation for all those who have never sailed across the Equator.

A day off on the island allows for the villagers on the nearby island opportunity to feed and entertain the visitors!

The race back to the marina had an overnight stay at some location. Each year the location had been changed but it’s somewhere around the half way point. This year it was Mabut Island and included a spicy fish dinner. The final race into the marina kicks off at 8am and it’s all over by mid afternoon.

Highlights of the week long event…
– sailing a Corsair down and then parking right on the beach of an uninhabited island where the sea is like an enormous pool!
– it’s a sojurn through are really nice but of the world
– it’s great racing with a different set of challenges everyday

Best bit is…
Competition between the Dashes is really good with each of the boats becoming more optimised over the years!

In 2019, we know more larger multihulls are coming – must be the cheap beer!

Hello
when my boat is on anchor with single line on the main hull, in case of wind it is moving a lot from one side to the other. Usually catamaran are mooring on a V shape on each hull. Should I do the same with my Tri?
If a V shape is better should I fix it at the bow of each ama or at the connection arms?
thanks for your help

Answer: Hi Oliver, Great questions you have here! The New Corsair Marine Sailing Manual covers all you need to know about setting up your shrouds and stays on Corsair trimarans or like models (like your Farrier trimaran F31R design). You can download the manual online here >>

If you have specific questions about the shrouds and stays on your boat, we suggest going in to talk to your local dealer about them. Each boat is a little different and it’s best to get the right care that is catered to your boat’s needs! Find a dealer near you >>

A Sprint 750 MKII‚ Tri Maiden‘ scored 12th position in a field of 244 starters at the Silver Rudder 2015 – Challenge of the Sea

I took part at Silver Rudder 2015 boat race around Fyn – a nice Danish island in the Baltic Sea.

It is the world’s biggest single handed offshore regatta. 330 boats of all kinds from small A-Cat to 45 foot racing yachts had been registered, but only 244 showed up at the starting line.

The task was, to sail around the tiny island, which in fact turned out to be not really tiny.

The slogan of the regatta says: 134 nautical miles round the island of Funen – alone against the elements.

This was very true for the day of racing. Weather forecast told us about strong winds of about 20 knots and gusts of 30 knots.

At this point my boat and me come into the scene: the Corsair Sprint 750 MK II ‚Tri Maiden‘, which I have learned to love in light wind breezes of my home yard on small lake Starnberg in Bavaria / Germany. Her cruising sails and alloy mast gave a bit of an optical contrast to all the foil sails and carbon gear at the boats around.

And me, a halfway ambitious family and regatta sailor on various small boats, but always on small lakes, mostly at flat winds, and never confronted with something you may call ‚waves‘.

So here we are at the starting line fighting to control the boat in the gusts of the pre start phase.

I was a little bit frightened. But as the show started, it went surprisingly easy. Even sailing very conservatively with the first reef in the main sail and the small jib only, Tri Maiden sprinted up and away.

My sail setup went out to be a good idea. When I just left the sound, heading towards the big belt, I passed Jakob Madssen standing on the beam of his capsized Dragonfly 28 Sport.

As he told me after the race, he started with full blown main sail and set the genaker. In this configuration it was a bad combination when a mighty gust from behind hit the tri, just pointing her nose down into solid wave – full throttle deep sea mission…

Tri Maiden surfed with ease through the waves. Even when her nose ploughed deep into the sea, a moment later she came back up with a rush again. The leeward ama sometimes reminded me of the TV dolphin Flipper, diving and emerging again.

It was a pleasure to glide with double digit knots many times constantly without even 1 impression of unsecure operation. This boat is really cool.

During the first passage – a half wind reach – I overtook about 150 other ships, mostly monohulls of any kind (they have been started sequentially separated in different size classes hours before).

The biggest surprise came to me when I had to leave the sheltered half wind part and got to manage all the upwind tack stuff on open water north of Fyn.

To my surprise I had no problem to run the same VMG, as the best of the remaining monohulls up there.

Even if they produced smaller tacking angles, speed was my argument in response.

Back in the sheltered, but narrow sound of Middelfart it was night – pitch black, no moon to spend a minimum amount of light.

Tri maiden and me come to rest, meaning 6-7 knots of push into the black nothing. Here and there some navigational lights gave a riddle of where my geografic position is – the answer was delivered from the plotter app on my tablet.

Short flush of adrenalin as a red light flashed on just about 30ft. aside – and moving!

I went aware of it being just another small ship, which obviously was not equipped with enough battery capacity, to cover a whole night of full current drain for the lights.

After some time of getting more confidence in the mode ‘sailing blindly’, it was time to set the screacher in the calming winds approaching the Svendburg sound. On the last nautical miles, the remaining wind came flat from behind. This led to heavy gybing with screacher in the narrow sound waters.

In the end, crossing the finish line, the relieving beep sign sounded. After about 150 nm and 19 hours, 11 minutes I finally ranked in 12th position. Only 1 monohull ship was faster than me.

All the faster multihulls have been piloted by very experienced or even professional sea sailors.

At the end of the day, there are 2 things to remark:

1) The Sprint 750 MK II is a wonderful boat, quick and structurally stable, easy to go. A good friend for the fast rush, but as well a stable partner for the long run. You merely can feel the experience of many years of craftsmanship at Corsair Marine. Many thanks to the guys, who built this clean sprint machine!

2) If you ever consider to sail singlehanded in the area, then join the Silver Rudder / Challenge of the Seas – it is worthwhile.

A big hug to Uschi, my patient wife. With her assistance she simply formed the base for my little adventure, never admitting she had less fun than me.

Special regards to Werner Stolz, who made trimaran addicts out of Uschi and me.

Best regards to the trimaran community,

The world’s largest single hand race “SILVERRUDDER CHALLENGE OF THE SEA” also called “Silver Rudder” has begun. The race started today September 23rd with start and finish in the beautiful Svendborg Sund. The 135 mile race is expected to last 16 – 17 hours for the competitive boats and for some a much longer, harder challenge lies ahead.

There are two Corsair Trimarans being raced in this years Silverrudder regatta. We have a Cruze 970 and a Pulse 600 entered in this years regatta being solo skippered by Christian Soyka (970) and Jörg Trap (Pulse 600). The pair have been training all week in the approach to this event and we are all hoping their hard work will have paid off.

Here is a link to the video of Training. Good luck to Christian and Jörg, today is going to be one tough en devour but will definitely be worth it once you have completed the 135 mile single handed race.
