Prior to the development of the 32ft Cruze 970, over 300 C31s were delivered to owners all around the world making this model one of the most successful trimarans in the world. The C31 was chosen for its great sailing qualities & rugged construction for a number of epic adventures in the Arctic including an incredible voyage through the notorious North West and East West Passages in a single season. However most were used for cruising and racing.

The Cruze 970 is an evolution of the C31 popular design but with greater comfort and amenities similar to that found on the larger C37.  The 970 is also slightly longer than the C31 and the deck has been raised creating approximately 15 percent additional inside space.  Most importantly, there is full standing headroom in the saloon area.

Here are a few photos from The Black Dog Dash in Martha’s Vineyard on July 18th, The Drone shot shows the beach with The Black Dog Tavern on the left and part of the 16 boat fleet pulled up to the beach. The Corsair Cruze 970 shots are my boat along with new owners Will and Kerry Saltonstall, their daughter Lucy, my wife Jane and Norm Farr. It was a fun time for all participants with an awards ceremony celebrating the 25th Black Dog Dash and great party at Kate Shands and Joe Molinar’s house who are new F-27 owners in the NEMA Fleet. – Bob Gleason

The Black Dog Dash held its 25th annual Black Dog multihull sailboat race on Saturday, July 18. A total of 15 boats raced the traditional course from Vineyard Haven to West Chop to Cape Pogue to Edgartown and back — a distance of 22 nautical miles.

The fastest boats finished in less than 2 hours and 15 minutes in the 10- to 15-mph SSE wind. A pursuit start, which tracks time over distance, was used. The boats started at anchor, slowest boat first at 11 am, with subsequent boats at intervals, ending up with the fastest boats starting last.

Boat sizes ranged from 24 to 40 feet long.

Racers belong to the 50-year-old New England Multihull Association (NEMA), which has 150 members and meets in Boston. Members come from New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, and are professionals, scientists, engineers, and architects, an elite group of excellent sailors with state-of-the-art trimarans and catamarans.

After breakfast at the Black Dog Tavern, T shirts were handed out to skippers and crew. After the race, all boats rafted up on the beach in front of the Black Dog Restaurant. Fun awards were given out, such as first entry, worst start, first late fee paid on time, most kids on board, and fastest elapsed time. More seriously, points count for the NEMA season trophy. The top racers: 1. Jay Spaulding and Irene Gonion’s Blue Moon from Pawcatuck, Conn.; 2. Mike Vidon’s Milk + Honey from Russo Park, N.Y.; 3. Dave Lussler’s Bazinga from Exeter, R.I.

Long time trimaran lover and Corsair dealer Werner Stolz has just returned from a new Cruze 970 handover in southern Europe. Her thrilled new owners, Andreas and family have driven her across Europe from Korneuburg, Austria to Marina Sant Andrea where the family will spend the summer sailing aboard their favorite multihull the Cruze 970.

The New Corsair 970 SPORT has arrived, and she boasts some impressive numbers.  Here’s the inside-track on how we made a fast boat even faster.

A Master Chef’s knife, not a Swiss Army knife

The Corsair 970 CRUZE is “the Swiss Army knife” of trimarans:  She meets trailering requirements in most regions, carries a full interior for cruising, and achieves remarkable speeds.  Part of the trailering consideration was to carry a mast of 12m tall.  The Corsair 970 SPORT is relieved of that consideration and comes equipped with a mast a full 1.5 metres taller.  The new Corsair 970 SPORT rig allows more power and improved sail shape and efficiency, while retaining control.

Power with Control

The 970 SPORT handles the increased power through a new aft traveler arrangement.  The position of the mainsail controls is now better suited for racing, with the ability to quickly fine-tune.

Weight Savings

The 970 CRUZE comes with a plush new interior throughout.  But interior materials do mean weight.  The 970 SPORT carries the new comfortable saloon interior, but saves weight in the cabins forward and aft.  Using lightweight coated surfaces in those places saves weight where it’s most important and allows resources to be spent on sails, equipment and the like.

The Skinny

All of that adds up:  The Corsair 970 SPORT has significantly enhanced power to weight ratio.  Compared to the 970 CRUZE, power to weight is up 9.5%.  An already powerful boat just got better.

The New Corsair CRUZE 970

Speed, performance, safety, reliability and ease of trailering are all features the Corsair Marine Triamarans is widely famous for and naturally these are integral to the Cruze 970. However, the design also now focuses on people and families as it is far more accommodating for the needs of partners, guests and children on board whilst still retaining good sailing performance.

The 970 is slightly longer than the C31 and the deck has been raised creating approximately 15 per cent additional space inside. Most importantly, there is full standing headroom in the saloon area. The saloon area is nished with a clean, white GRP liner. The galley area is larger with additional drawers and ample storage. The forward and aft bunks are longer and wider than the C31 giving more generous accommodation area for crew. The Cruze 970 also caters for privacy with a full enclosed head. The more functional cockpit has been extended and a transom mainsheet track facilitates free movement within the cockpit. The raised, side seating increases both comfort and visibility (a great design feature taken from highly successful C37).

For sailing performance, the oats have been designed with additional buoyancy giving the Cruze 970 trimaran greater stability and comfort for all her passengers.
